Good in Theory – Genevieve Claire

Catch my breath in the mirror
I am God, says love.
Sing a lullaby and trust
that I am not a lucid dreamer
— Are you God?
You are my husband
and you are slick
and you wear Oud Wood
because you’re a solid one and
you want to make our child learn patience:
thank you
thank you

You were so kind
when you paraphrased the sermon
You were so right
that to annihilate the self is
the most noble thing to do
When you’re sitting on prime real estate
When you’re both
professional contortionists
and topiaries of Friesian horses
block the ugly view
But I’m just wondering
if it’s all too much
and we’re two knots
on a brittle rope
and you’ve been diligent at sharpening
Your incisors
while I wash the dishes
in my red hooded cloak
