I FORGOT GOD IN THAT PHOTOGRAPH – Binnaz Deniz Yildiz

The bed a night creature, the bed a bat: animal fragment, muffled parasite
In a reptile’s severed tongue, slipping from the corner of a mouth, a snot-nosed child’s milk tooth, sweat-drenched melancholy, stain: the well of Babylon
Cracking wretched dream, obsession within a plunging neckline, the will walking into the leaf, the silent wool-beater nailing his temple
Flame ivy, the sleeping ego (the cormorant I swallowed) brewing at the head of the table, courtyard and demon in carnage, gall bladder cloudy from the start
A coal-black eyeball rolls, observation tower, the prayer harmony of the statue with crushed stones, the collar of a blind dog around my soul, I found my wax beggar in my rooms
Opening its palm to the underbelly of the earth, my insect womb is harvested with agony, the final scent a chalk crumb in my hair, and man a coin in the pocket of Porus
Crematorium — red shoes reflecting on water — the last child with bone-laced ties and shining skin — I forgot God in that photograph
The body inside my brain — garments flying in the dark… Blood on my hands, her feet still trembling in the sky…
