Love Letter – Claire Brennan
October 1, 2026
God invented nightmares to make us grateful for the lives that we wake up in.
Yet I’ve sinned ten times since breakfast, and I’ll probably do ten more after lunch.
I’ve been catty, I’ve been cruel, I’ve been short-tempered and neurotic.
God invented daydreams so that I’d know my husband when I met him.
He’s been forgiving, he’s been calm, he’s been gracious and true.
I pray the rosary,
I say my Hail Marys,
I venerate the saints,
I feel my husband’s arms around my body,
and his breath against my ribs,
and I know that
I made it to Eden.
Jesus created the Holy Catholic Church
so that I could confess
and say I’m sorry that I was bad,
and I’ll probably do it again —
and I’ll be sorry for that too.
I look up to the sky,
and I look up to my husband,
and I guess all it is that I wanted to say
is that I love you so much,
and I can’t wait
to wake up in your arms in the morning.
