Pacific Straussian – Matilda Z. Halen

I didn’t know you

Many years ago

On the other side of the Atlantic

The prodigy, prince, philosopher.

                   /       Pacific

                  //      Transatlantic

                 ///     Surrealistic

                 My     Darling

                 You didn’t know me

                 Many years ago

On the seaside of the little island

I was a particle of stardust under the moonless sky as you were sitting on the beach reading G.H Hardy,

11pm mother said she’s giving birth to me

Thousands of miles away from you

You didn’t know me

The girl who barely cried.

Years later I saw a black helicopter

Passing through the sky

Electric blue,

Like your eyes

Eyes of the Prince in exile.

                  The Scottish Knight’s black coat

Eyes of the Prince in exile

                  Bright Blue.

Ironed in my heart like a shining star

                  Your eyes, electric blue.

I remember the snowfall

on the 14th Street North West

The smudge of ashen fluff and the reflected sky

The pouring rain on the Boulevard

The paintings on your wall

Pacific blue.

I don’t have a homeland

You fly across half of the earth

Take me to Saigon or take me home

You gave me television and eyes of blue.

What if I was born in Nebraska?

I was five and you were sixteen

I broke my leg when I was fifteen

You didn’t know me

The girl who cried a lot

The roses in Nantucket

Blooming under the sunlight

   I don’t have a homeland

You fly across half of the earth

Take me to Hiroshima or take me home

You gave me little stars and eyes of blue.

My only courage of life is standing by you

Darling, my dear Pacific Straussian

Tomorrow is gonna be a great day.

Just give me your hand.
