Stuck Again – Jason Reid

Bury my body far beneath the sand.
Cover my limbs with carpet that has forgotten
The need to fly. For I must stay still.
It is not soundless sleep that I beseech —
Pills have become the toll-takers of sleep —
The sandman sits idle on his lost throne —
So bury my body far beneath the sand.
Then starve me, please, to silence, past
Cerberus’s stomach growls — and his howls.
Elect me to a harder fate. Give me
Fire, though chained below a dark desert floor.
Then let me rise again, and wink the sand
From my desiccated eyes. Only then
Shall I know that I won’t be stuck again.
